Water Marble Picture Tutorial

Okay, so since I had quit a few requests to do a tutorial on how I do my water marbling, here it is. I start with filtered water, and since ours is refrigerated, I heat it up for a about 20 sec. in the microwave, just to make it room temp. I use a throw away coffee cup that I have cut in half. Here are my basic supplies. Oh just so you all know, this is with my sad, pathetic broken middle finger. I know it looks awful, and I'm sorry, but I have decided to just let it be, and hope it grows out soon.Okay anyways, for this mani I used Sally Hansen Gray Area, OPI Lucky Lucky Lavender and China Glaze White on White.

I first did a base of the OPI (sorry about the poor lighting, where I do this, it's not near a direct light source)

When I start, I make sure all the lids are off. Here I just dropped in a blob of my first color, Gray Area, and you can see it spreads.

Then I dropped in a blob of White on White, right in the center of the Gray Area

and dropped in a blob of the OPI

I repeated the 3 colors again, until I was happy with how it looked.

Then using my pencil, I lightly drag the polish into designs in the cup

This is what it looked like, when I stopped, and I liked the designs I had.

I tape each finger, using 3 pieces of tape.

Then you pick which part of the design you made, you want on your nail.

and dip your nail into it, at an angle.

Once you have fully dipped your nail, I take my pencil, and with my nail still in the water, swipe it around my nail, and this picks up all the excess polish, so you don't ruin your nail, when you remove it from the water.

I then remove the tape, and do the rest the same way, re-doing the polish dipping and all. This is what I ended up with.

Then using some nail Q-tips, I clean up the excess polish from around my nail with 100% pure acetone.

Here is my mess, when I'm all done, lol

Then once all fingers are cleaned up, and my top coat has been applied, this is my final mani :)

I really hope this helps you guys :P

  1. Well that's just fabulous!!

Thanks for being so informative. I am confident I can do this! My nails are unfortunately short at the moment (sad breakage incident) but as soon as they are fit for coloured polish I'M DOING THIS! :-D

    2 questions:

    1. Does it use a lot of polish / do you have to drop a lot of polish in the water? Is it wasteful?

    2. When your nails is in the water and you swipe around it with the pencil - do you touch the nail with it or just go near around it? Does it just pull the extra polish away in the water or something?

    Thanks again. Another lovely creation!

    Gorgeous! Gorgeous! Gorgeous! x

    1. Maybe try using Jello instead of water. When I marble paper I have used jello to suspend my paint. Don't know if it will work but it's worth a try. Oh, make sure the jello has chilled first!
      MelissaEdwards1@yahoo.com

      Delete
    2. if you use jello I highly doubt it would go on your nails as well. nails do not soak things up, paper does.

    3. To your first question it just takes a drop, typically the same amount you would put on a nail. For the second question you can just lightly run whatever you are using to move the polish away against your finger but don't touch the nail. I found the hardest part is doing my right hand since I am right handed. Also do not use Styrofoam cups. Sometimes the drop can come off the brush real fast and it will fall to the bottom and will eat through the cup. Then you have a big problem (learned that the hard way).

  2. This is just so cool!! I want to try this!! :D Hopefully I'll be able to do it right :)

  3. this is a great tutorial!!
    your marble looks great!

    just a tip...
if I marble and I do the 1e drop of polish in the water I always go round the polish..so that its going to stick at the cup...then it stays on the place!

    1. what do u mean?

      Delete
    2. When you drop the first drop of paint into the cup, take the tip of the pencil and on the outer edges of the drop pull them to the cups edge where the paint will cling to the cup and not move when you go to dip your nail in.

    3. ^ I have found that to be helpful. Also found undercoating using one color in the water instead of brushing an undercoat on, it's much less thick and less risk of the design bubbling.

      Delete
    4. How do you undercoat in the water? Sounds interesting, I hate having to wait for the undercoat to dry because I have a problem with over applying polish :(

      Delete
    5. no you dont undercoat in the water... I think she means that you do your undercoat with a color that you're going to use in the water marble thing..

      Delete
    6. You can put the base coat on in the water. I prefer to brush it on myself. One other thing I found that works really well is when you want to put a top coat of a holographic polish you can do it in water. Just put on your base color...I like to use black...the put a few drops of holographic polish in the water and dip just like you do for the marble. It uses less of the holographic polish and looks great!!

    1. Well i tried a water marble nail thing before and when i used the pencil to swirl it around and make the pretty design, the nail polish in the water completely stuck to the pencil and came off of the water and it was ruined so i tried again and again and again and guess what? The same thimng happened every tie and I got so frustrated and i just quit the whole thing. I am going to try again and see if ur tutorial helps me at all!

  6. Hi lovely!!
I don't know why I can't get this right. my polish cercles don't want to spread, they just remain concentrated and then I just get this gray colour, is it because of the water? does it have to be bottled water, or can I use tap water too?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have had the same problem every single time!! I have used plastic, paper, glass, big, little cups, room temp cold and hot water, and many brands/types of polishes with different thicknesses and still no luck!! The polish doesn't spread and when it does I go to make a design and its dried already and wrinkles and creases and bubbles :( can anyone help?

      Delete
    2. hey, i had that problem when i started water marbling. i found that if you use filtered water, from a bottle or a filter such as brita, it works better. the water has to be room temperature, too. i found opi nailpolish spreads well. hope this helped. xoxox.

      Delete
    3. to the comment before mine : although I have never tried OPI i heard from many different blogs websites ect. that it works okay. I use Sally Hensen X-Treme wear bottles because it works very well and stays on fairly long with out a clear coat. When I do this technique I use tap water at basically room temp or as close as I can get. Hope this helps!
      :D

    4. I think more expensive nail polishes work better... Like if it's a better brand..

      Delete
    5. @Anonymous No, you can use cheaper polishes and they work just fine. I have used polish that cost 89 cents from Walmart. Not all polishes will work. It is trial and error.

      Delete
    6. To answer about circles not spreading. *I havent tried it yet* but just read elsewhere to thin the polish and do not use polish remover! Apparentoy they make polish thinner. And another girl said banana oil. Good luck! On to more research before I reattepmt.

  7. Wow O_O I'm in awe, that is incredibly creative! How long did the entire process take you?? I'm tempted to try this, though I'm sure I'd make a huge mess!

  8. This is a pretty one. I might have to do one for Valentine's Day.

  9. Thanks!
I really wanted to know if I should use room temp. or cold water.
So room temp. is the answer :-)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Thanks everyone, and you're all very welcome. I hope this helps some of you :)

Rabbit, it really doesn't use that much polish. Each ring you see, is 1 drop of polish, so I really don't consider it to be too wasteful. When you're swiping the pencil in the water, you do not touch your nail, you're just removing the extra polish on top of the water, so when you bring your nail out, no excess gets on your nail, and smears it :P

Renate, I have heard that, but haven't had a problem with getting a design I like yet. I think I'm just lazy, LOLOLOL.

Une Ruxi à Paris, I have read that you do have to use either bottled water or filtered. I guess the polish just doesn't eact well when tap is used. I would try that first, and see if you still have the same issues.

Celina, the first time or two, it did take me a while, about an hour, but I've gotten it down to under 30 minutes :P

betty, yes def room temp is a key in ths working properly :P

  11. Great pictures you have there! I can never get my polish to spread out as nicely as you have there, do you know if the type of polish matters or the water?

Tried out a couple polishes (some holographic ones and Essie solid ones too, tap water) and they just kind of disappear.

    Love your blog! :)

    ReplyDelete
  13. Thanks Adeline!! I do know not all polishes work well with this. I try to use ones that are really pigmented, or 1 coaters. Also using a base helps with the ones that appear to be to sheer in the water. For example with holos, I would do a black base. I also have heard that tap water does not work well. You need to try either bottled water or filtered.

    1. I was trying to show my cousin how to do the water marble nails, but I couldn't figure out why it wasn't working ( I have done it before on myself..). So I went back and referenced your blog (which has become an integral part of my nail life)and figured out that it was the fact that I was using tap water when I was attempting to demostrate it for her. So, yes; it is definitely a difference in results using filtered (bottled) water vs. tap.

      Delete
    2. this may be true but in my case I use tap every time and it has been succeseful every time

      Delete
    3. it depends on the place where you live... the sp.gravity of tap water is different from place to place... in the place where i used to live (Germany) i used tap water... but now here (in India) I kept messing it up when i used tap water... when i tried it with bottled water, it worked perfectly...

  17. I really want to try this, but I know I will make such a mess. haha thanks for the tutorial

    ReplyDelete
  18. Cute marble! And thanks for the tutorial!

    ReplyDelete
  19. My polish won't ever spread out for some reason... This is a good tutorial, though!

    ReplyDelete
  20. That's insane! I would have never guessed that's how you do it. It looks so cool!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Thanks ladies!!

Anonymous, yes, you do need to re-drop the polishes and re-swirl for each nail. Sometimes though, when I'm in a hurry, I would dip 2-3 nails in at once.

Brittany, you should def try it! It is a tad messy, but just do it all on a paper towel, and that helps with the cleanup.

Kendal, are you using room temp, bottled or filtered water? Not all polishes work with this or togther, so it's just trial and error.

Kamani, I was sooo shocked the first time I watched a tutorial on youtube! It's so creative!

  24. Great tutorial! Only thing I still don't get completely, what you mean by swirling the pen around before taking the nail out of the water? You mean like slicing your nail free from the pattern?

    ReplyDelete

  28. This is so pretty! Thank you for posting this. I am going to try marbling again using your tips and hopefully it turns out decent :)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Thank you everyone!!

Deborah, when I say swirl it round, your nail is under the water, so you're just removing all the polish that is still sitting on top of the water, so you don't mess up your nail when you bring it out. Just make sure not to touch your nail with the pencil, or whatever you use to swirl your polish :P

Brittany, def give it another go, and let me know how it turns out!!

Ximena, I never used a base coat for years, but I just recently picked up Gelous, from Sally's, to help baby my broken nail, lol.

Cammy, thanks!! I can now do them in 20-30 minutes :)

Julie, I tape mine before I drop the polish, since the polish seems to dry pretty quick in the water.

  37. Awesome. I tried this one time, but I used tap water (which I didn't know made a difference, but it makes sense!) and the nail polishes I used weren't that great. I want to go do this now! I need to get some of those awesome qtips.

    Kimberly

    ReplyDelete
  51. Mine might be a tad warm, but not very much, since i heat it in the microwave. You def do have to work fast, and not all polishes work. It takes some trial and error to get the right colors to cooperate ;)

  109. Me and my friend tried to do this at home but it didn't work... do u think it might b a prob with the nail polish itself? Do we need to shake it or something?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, I have seen too many videos for this and they all say that you can use any nail polish. As far as shaking it goes...you should always shake your nail polish no matter what type of manicure you do. I think the issue stems from water temperature. It says to use room temperature water...but...everyone's room temperature is different. I may try this again with different water temperatures to see what happens.

    1. Yes I am. You jumped all over Chloe for no reason. First off no one twisted your arm and forced you to do the mani. Second, it isn't her fault that it didn't work. It didn't work for me either but I'm not going to blame Chloe or anyone else. It has to do with the water temperature, not a blog post. Go look on youtube...there are several videos showing how to do this mani and every one of them are exactly the same as how she described it on here. Don't be so quick to judge. It wasn't fair of you to blame Chloe, she didn't do anything wrong and she certainly didn't deserve you going off on her.

    2. Well I'm sorry that I was in a bad mood. Normally I wouldn't say things like that, but I tried like 20 times, changed the water like 10, and my family kept breathing down my neck asking me what am I doing over and over. Then I was told to give her hate mail.

    3. It takes practice and penitence. And if it dried you need to work faster, but efficient.

    4. That was a very mean thing to do and say. I too tried one time and failed miserably, but I tried again after I had looked at a few more and it turned out great the second time around. Don't be so mean and hateful because that is a sure fire way of getting no help at all. You should apologize to Chloe.

  118. I just tried to do this, and the nail polish didn't spread out in the water. It just formed a little dot in the middle of my cup, every nail polish I tried did that as well. Could it be the brand of nail polish? Or is my water temperature wrong? It wasn't cold or hot, it was pretty much room temperature.

    ReplyDelete

    1. check your water temp. it needs to be room temp or slightly warmer.

      Delete
    2. I have seen on other videos that you have to shake the bowl a bit to make the dot spread.

      Delete
    3. Actually you don't shake the cup/bowl, you can just tap it or you can use your orange stick to guide the polish. If you shake it the colors will mix.

  119. Love your site Chloe! I randomly found your page from a pin on pinterest, but saw this tutorial and it reminded me of a pin I'd seen earlier this evening.

I read your picture policy and just thought you should know that some one has ripped off these photos and put them on pinterest with your watermarks removed and their website stamped on the bottom.

I repinned it here with a link to this page in the description:http://pinterest.com/pin/286330488779637708/

    Love this tutorial though!

  121. I think this is a really good tutorial but maybe it should say that "room temperature" shouldn´t be to cold :) at least for me, warmer water works better since cold water makes the polish dry really fast, and then it just sticks to the pen/pin, when you try to make patterns :)
I use lukewarm tap water and it works well enough not to have to buy filtered water :) But some polishes just don´t want to work, I used two OPI polishes from the same collection and same finish on them, one works perfectly, and the other not at all, a mystery :D the only thing with warmer water is, when you have dipped your fingers, you have to hold them there for a while until the polish on the surface have dried, before you can remove the acces :) And if you still have problem, try using a new/clean cup and clean water in between dips. I usually dip all 4 fingers at once, so I only need two dips total.

    1. That means you are dropping the polish from too high up. Make sure you drop the polish close to the water.

  126. do you need cold water?

    1. No...cold water will not work. You need room temperature distilled water.

  128. After trying several times I finally got it to work. It still wasn't as pretty as Chloe's but it worked nonetheless. The tricks I used were as follows...

Use distilled water. I tried several different types of water and only distilled worked for me.

The water has got to be room temperature or even a little warmer. Cold water will seize up the polish.

Make sure that there is no air blowing...like turn off any fans and make sure you aren't in front of an air conditioner vent.

    Work quickly.

Lastly, don't get frustrated...it takes time and patience.
    Good luck ladies!

    3. its not the cold water ur nail polish is too thick

    4. It is the water temperature. It is not the thickness of the polish...unless your polish is REALLY thick then no it won't work. Cold water will dry the polish.

  132. TO EVRYONE: WHEN UR DOING THE MARBLE NAILS THE NAIL POLISH HAS TO BE THIN. iF ITS NOT BRAND NEW AND SLIGHTY WATER IT WONT WORK. TO TEST TO SEE IT ITS NEW SHAKE THE METAL BALLS INSIDE IT. IF THEY MOVE AROUND ALOT THE NAIL POLISH WILL WORK. IF NOT GET A NEW NAIL POLISH :p

    1. The water temperature has everything to do with it. I have used thicker and thin polishes and had them work just fine. The water however has got to be room temperature or even a slight bit warmer depending on how cool your room is.

  136. Hii, i love your designs and i tried doing this but i came across a problem.. the first drop of polish spreads of fully to the edges of the cup, but the second drop spreads much less even though i put it in right after i put the the first drop in... and then the third barely spreads out and the forth doesn't spread at all...

    what do you suggest?
