Back to Basics....

So this might not exactly be basic to some of you, but it was one of my very first 'edgy' manis I did, lol. I never used to wear dark colors. I actually think this mani is what helped me fall in love with the matte polishes. Now, I know this is posted in my 'Playing Catch Up' post, back when I started this blog, but I decided to re-do it. For this I used OPI Lincoln Park After Dark Matte and just Seche Vite for the tips, to make them extra shiny :) I also noticed that my older version's pic was floating around on Tumblr a while ago, and some post had wrong info about it! This is not done with a black polish and matte top coat, although you could very well achieve the same mani using those, nor are the tips photoshopped in any way.  I do have to say, that this mani, when I wear it, gets me more compliments than any other so far.

    Elizabeth, this is actually a dark purple :) If you mean just a fairly dark color, not a blackened purple, then no I haven't, lol.

  9. All right. That's it. I'm going to get that matte polish. I was so afraid I'd mess it up, since matte sometimes looks downright ugly. Any tips on how to deal with a matte polish? Because I'm still slightly apprehensive. XD

    URGH sometimes it's frustrating to be a indecisive girl. XD

  10. i love love love this mani. i tried it a few weeks ago after i first saw it. unfortunately, it didn't look too great. i can't stand when my nails are long and mine are naturally more oval shaped than square :( but, i did get the effect a little bit!

  15. I just found your blog, and love your tape method. Everything looks so clean and perfect!
    I had a question as to if you do your thumbs the same as the other fingers. Mine are more rounded, and I am not sure how the tape will look if it isnt square... any thoughts?
    I am stuck inside due to snow; and am dying to go out and buy some tape to start practicing!!

  18. Lincoln Park After Dark was the polish I purchased a few years ago when I was JUST starting to get interested in polish. I wore it EVERYWHERE. I only wanted matte black nails or robins egg blue.:) This is basic for me.

  20. Ugh! I need to get my hands on a Matte topcoat... or some matte polishes.. I only have neons which you can only wear occasionally. I saw the Essie Matte topcoat at Target but I was with my mom and she wouldn't fuel my addiction.. sad face haha Looks beautiful.

  26. I absolutely love this mani. You've so far convinved me of a lot of things, and wearing dark polish is one of them! I never used to wear dark colors either, but you make it look so elegant, that I find myself liking the dark colors the most~! But I can see why you get so many compliments on this, it is just awesome. I received my Essie Matte About You, which I love :-) And I got Nubar - Nubar 2010 - which are gorgeous flakies! But I do think I need OPI Lincoln Park After Dark Matte, because I notice you use it a lot and I love every mani you do with it~!

    Cammy, my best tip is to work fast. The matte polishes tend to dry faster.

    Liter, yes I do my thumbs the same way as the others, I try to keep them more square to match :)

    Mrs. Lacquer, yeah it really is practise, and having a squarer tip helps match the tape.

    Crystal, oh YAY, I'm glad you got the Essie!! Can you believe I actually don't own 1 Nubar!?!?!?!

    1. I'm trying to figure out how to do the shredded black mani (from tip to cuticle).How do you cut the tape, and what order do you paint? I am FASCINATED by these. I am not a matte person, but you had me at the first glimpse on this shredded black mani!!! A tutorial???? Please?

  28. Love this look. The Lincoln Park After Dark always looks black in your photos. Yet whenever I go to the OPI website it looks like Eggplant colored. I love the black look. Are there more than one LPAD colors?

  29. No way! Nubar 2010 is stunning - you'd love it! Any reason why you don't own any?! lol I've found a lot of them on Ebay - free shipping too! The Nubar website quoted $12.46 for shipping, so I figure Ebay is my best bet. I am looking to get Reclaim (green holo) and Peacock Feathers (blue-purple duochrome, but there are SO many others I love from swatches. Their Sparkles Collection looks JUST like Milani One Coat Glitters! I plan to get the Milani (they are cheaper of course) but the Nubar collection has a couple gorgeous different color ones, like Hyacinth, Night, and Petunia!
    Maybe I'll persuade you into a few? hehe :-)

  31. Lauren, Thanks!! I def looks more black when you apply it. There is only LPAD Matte, Suede and the regular creme.

    Crystal, Nope, there really is no reason. I know....it's weird. I do really like Peacock Feathers, but I guess I'm just not completely wowed by them. I am also on a no-buy, well, kind of, lol.

  54. This is stunning!! Where oh where does one purchase these matte OPI colours in Canada? I can't even find their matte topcoats, much less their matte colours.
    Did you just add shiny topcoat to the tips, not a shiny Lincoln Park?

  60. As soon as I saw this I fell in LOVE! And decided I have to try this. Went to ULTA and looked at OPI Lincoln Park After Dark but it came out glossy not matte (as I wanted). Can you share what the OPI number is? Is it W42? Was there a special collection 'MATTE' or should buy the suede collection? Pls let me know! I can't wait to have nails like this!!! Again, LOVE IT!!!!

    3. Hi Chloe, I'm new to your blog and absolutely love it!!! You've got talent girl, I'll be busy for awhile trying to repeat so many of your beautiful nails, can't wait!! I've been trying to contact you via email but haven't gotten a reply so I'm hoping this way is better to reach you. I wanted to try the OPI LINCOLN PARK AFTER DARK matte mani w/ shiny tips but having a hard time finding the discontinued matte polish. I did buy ESSIE's Matte About You top coat and Seche Vites top coat and I did find OPI LPAD nail lacquer (not matte) and was wondering if I'd get the same look using the regular OPI polish with the Essie matte top coat and then seche vite for tips. Will that work? I think Ebay has the OPI matte form of LPAD for $27 and the regular OPI LPAD non-matte polish is selling for $7, so if I could get the same look just using the matte top coat I'll buy the $7 OPI. I didn't want to order either polish without your advice first. If you feel the look will be better with the actual matte OPI polish then I'll splurge. Basically I just want to know if the 2 polishes are the same color (matte and lacquer in LPAD)and if you feel the essie matte top coat will work or do you recommend getting the OPI MATTE polish. Please let me know. Any advice you have on that mani will be greatly appreciated. I'll keep it short in future writings, I promise. Keep up the great nails!!!

  63. certainly like your website however you have to check the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to inform the reality on the other hand I'll definitely come back again.

  72. Hello Chloe! This style is so chic!! I tried it today, with a matte top coat on Chanel polish (505 Particulière), then tape, then paint the tips with Sephora "Ultra shine top coat"
    Well, it ended not so well : maybe I put too much shiny top coat on the tips because a "crest" (kind of a little edge) appeared between the matte parts and the shiny tips...
    Anyway, I'll keep on trying! :)

  85. will the opi lincoln park after dark polish work for the matte mani with french tips if i use the OPI LPAD lacquer with essie matte top coat and seche vite on tips or is the OPI LPAD actual matte polish needed to create that mani? I'm hopin to create it with the OPI LPAD regular polish (not matte) and just use a matte top coat and swipe seche vite on tips for xtra shine. Will that work?? HELP ME!!

  90. Hi there, I recently found your blog and attempted to do the black matte with shiny tips but I am facing a problem. I used the matte polish and added clear top coat to the tips but now I have something like an edge where the shiny part is showing. I am not sure how to get rid of it since I can't use a top coat on the entire nail. I used tape to make the tips and have applied a really thin layer. Any suggestions? Also, how do you prevent the nail polish from running under the tape when doing designs? I always have ugly smudges when I remove the tape... I really want to be a bit creative with my nails, but these things are driving me insane lol..

Attended ULTA and also checked out OPI Lincoln Recreation area At night but it came out shiny not matte (as I wanted). Would you discuss what the OPI quantity is usually? Will it be W42? Was there an exclusive series 'MATTE' or perhaps can buy the suede series? Pls let me know! I can't delay to obtain claws similar to this!!! Again, ADORE IT!!!!
