So this might not exactly be basic to some of you, but it was one of my very first 'edgy' manis I did, lol. I never used to wear dark colors. I actually think this mani is what helped me fall in love with the matte polishes. Now, I know this is posted in my 'Playing Catch Up' post, back when I started this blog, but I decided to re-do it. For this I used OPI Lincoln Park After Dark Matte and just Seche Vite for the tips, to make them extra shiny :) I also noticed that my older version's pic was floating around on Tumblr a while ago, and some post had wrong info about it! This is not done with a black polish and matte top coat, although you could very well achieve the same mani using those, nor are the tips photoshopped in any way. I do have to say, that this mani, when I wear it, gets me more compliments than any other so far.

OOOO! i really want to do this now!! I have on a Nfu Oh Flakie so I think I'll mattify that (who doesn't love matte flakies!) and then add a clear!! omg im so excited!!!
ReplyDeletedoes it matter what type of nail polish you use for this?
DeleteWhat a great mani! Simple yet effective!
ReplyDeleteyour mani's with OPI Lincoln Park After Dark Matte really make me want that polish! next time I see it I'm picking it up!
ReplyDeletehave you ever done it with a still dark, but not black colour (like navy blue, brown, purple or red?) I think that would be really pretty
ReplyDeleteLove this. Simple but very catching!
ReplyDeleteThanks you guys!
ReplyDeletePolish Lava, that sounds awesome!
Danielle, ooooh, you def should pick this up!! I use it all the time, lol.
Elizabeth, this is actually a dark purple :) If you mean just a fairly dark color, not a blackened purple, then no I haven't, lol.
Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeleteAll right. That's it. I'm going to get that matte polish. I was so afraid I'd mess it up, since matte sometimes looks downright ugly. Any tips on how to deal with a matte polish? Because I'm still slightly apprehensive. XD
ReplyDeleteURGH sometimes it's frustrating to be a indecisive girl. XD
i love love love this mani. i tried it a few weeks ago after i first saw it. unfortunately, it didn't look too great. i can't stand when my nails are long and mine are naturally more oval shaped than square :( but, i did get the effect a little bit!
ReplyDeletei just may have to buy LPOD matte. this is simply beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI need to get that OPI polish... nice.
ReplyDeleteVery elegant!
ReplyDeletei love this! it's so unexpected!
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog, and love your tape method. Everything looks so clean and perfect!
ReplyDeleteI had a question as to if you do your thumbs the same as the other fingers. Mine are more rounded, and I am not sure how the tape will look if it isnt square... any thoughts?
I am stuck inside due to snow; and am dying to go out and buy some tape to start practicing!!
This is so cool! Is there a trick to getting the tape on the tips to match the shape of your nails or is it just practice?
ReplyDeleteI really have to get me some more of those matte polishes :) This one is nice
ReplyDeleteLincoln Park After Dark was the polish I purchased a few years ago when I was JUST starting to get interested in polish. I wore it EVERYWHERE. I only wanted matte black nails or robins egg blue.:) This is basic for me.
ReplyDeleteLovely. I think I'm going to do this with a matte soon. I need to get LPAD Matte. I've wanted it since it came out but never got it.
ReplyDeleteUgh! I need to get my hands on a Matte topcoat... or some matte polishes.. I only have neons which you can only wear occasionally. I saw the Essie Matte topcoat at Target but I was with my mom and she wouldn't fuel my addiction.. sad face haha Looks beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your compliment on our twinner nails :) Your blog is my fav :)
ReplyDeletegorgeous!!
ReplyDeletei keep wanting to buy this color but the shop i normally buy my OPIs from is always out of stock....I'm going to check again tomoro and if they dont have it still.....im going to get it online ;) its too tempting...your nails are AMAZING as always ;)
ReplyDeleteWow, that's HOT!
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!!
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love this mani. You've so far convinved me of a lot of things, and wearing dark polish is one of them! I never used to wear dark colors either, but you make it look so elegant, that I find myself liking the dark colors the most~! But I can see why you get so many compliments on this, it is just awesome. I received my Essie Matte About You, which I love :-) And I got Nubar - Nubar 2010 - which are gorgeous flakies! But I do think I need OPI Lincoln Park After Dark Matte, because I notice you use it a lot and I love every mani you do with it~!
ReplyDeleteThanks you guys! This is and will always be one of my must haves!!
ReplyDeleteCammy, my best tip is to work fast. The matte polishes tend to dry faster.
Liter, yes I do my thumbs the same way as the others, I try to keep them more square to match :)
Mrs. Lacquer, yeah it really is practise, and having a squarer tip helps match the tape.
Crystal, oh YAY, I'm glad you got the Essie!! Can you believe I actually don't own 1 Nubar!?!?!?!
I'm trying to figure out how to do the shredded black mani (from tip to cuticle). How do you cut the tape, and what order do you paint? I am FASCINATED by these. I am not a matte person, but you had me at the first glimpse on this shredded black mani!!! A tutorial???? Please?
DeleteLove this look. The Lincoln Park After Dark always looks black in your photos. Yet whenever I go to the OPI website it looks like Eggplant colored. I love the black look. Are there more than one LPAD colors?
ReplyDeleteNo way! Nubar 2010 is stunning - you'd love it! Any reason why you don't own any?! lol I've found a lot of them on Ebay - free shipping too! The Nubar website quoted $12.46 for shipping, so I figure Ebay is my best bet. I am looking to get Reclaim (green holo) and Peacock Feathers (blue-purple duochrome, but there are SO many others I love from swatches. Their Sparkles Collection looks JUST like Milani One Coat Glitters! I plan to get the Milani (they are cheaper of course) but the Nubar collection has a couple gorgeous different color ones, like Hyacinth, Night, and Petunia!
ReplyDeleteMaybe I'll persuade you into a few? hehe :-)
I really want to try this. I have a matte black and a purple...hhmmm.. if only I had the nail length to pull it off....
ReplyDeleteLauren, Thanks!! I def looks more black when you apply it. There is only LPAD Matte, Suede and the regular creme.
ReplyDeleteCrystal, Nope, there really is no reason. I know....it's weird. I do really like Peacock Feathers, but I guess I'm just not completely wowed by them. I am also on a no-buy, well, kind of, lol.
Arlene, you should def try it! I think it looks great on all nail lengths!
This is gorgeous! I did it today, and love it!
ReplyDeleteI am starting a French nail polish blog, and if you don't mind, I'd love to share your post, is it ok? (I'd translate it a bit, and put my own pics as well)
Wow what a fantastic combination! I love how shiny some of your manicure ares, yay!
ReplyDeleteItaelle, oh I'm so glad you tried it!! Of course you can share my post. Thanks for asking! I'll def check out your blog.
ReplyDeleteTamara, thanks, I owe all the shininess to SV :P
Well I can understand the no-buy after seeing your collection :-) hehe but I guess my collection is small enough that I'm just venturing out to all these amazing colors out there. My goodness their are so many colors!! My head is spinning!
ReplyDeletei love this! edgy and sophisticated at the same time!
ReplyDeletethis is soooo beautiful and elegant! I really envy you for your nails ;)
ReplyDeleteCrystal, Eeekkk, I've already broken my no-buy!! What is wrong with me *shakes head* oh well, lol
ReplyDeleteSarah, thanks!!!
Caitlyn, Aww, thank you!! Don't though, lol, my middle finger nail, is not nice!
hahahaha :-) I know I would never make it on a no-buy...I just don't even try, lol
ReplyDeleteYep, I think you're right, there's no point, I SUCK at no-buys, lol
ReplyDeleteWow, such a great idea! I love it! I just discovered your blog, and I'm so exited!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Tattookali!!!
ReplyDeleteI believe this is my all time fav....what a great idea! Matte with the shiny black...I'm off to try to duplicate, lol.
ReplyDeleteThanks Amy!!! I hope you try it and love it!!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I found you. This pic is going around Pinterest but all the links lead to beachblack. Then I saw your comment on beachblack. I repinned your pic so the link will come back to you and I said shame on beachblack for removing "Chloe's Nails" off the pic. I started painting my nails again because my kids have grown. New follower. I hope you don't mind but I'm going to blog about your cool mani next week. http://scrappysugargirl.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI posted about this fantastic nail idea here: http://lettherealworldbegin.blogspot.com/2011/10/pretty-pinterest-nail-art.html

I’ve become such a Pinspire Junkie. I pinned your pictures on Pinspire – http://www.pinspire.jp/pin/show/116809. As a Virgo, I’m always looking for a best way to organize. In fact, I’m in the process of moving years of bookmarked “風変わりな物集” into individual boards on Pinspire. It’s a great way for me to share my bookmarks with all my friends. I decided to also move your page from my bookmark to Pinspire. I love Pinspire! Feel free to comment or add other Pins on my Pinspire Board – always looking for fellow pinners!
ReplyDeleteSo is there a matte lincoln park after dark and a glossy one? Cause I just tried this and my nails just look black? Help! Please!!
ReplyDeleteYes there is a matte version :)
Deletei am trying to make a Tumblr account but i don't know what a URL is so is there anyone out there who can help me? please….
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
ReplyDeletewell thats not a URL please do not write those kind of things …. there might be children on this website …
ReplyDeleteThis is stunning!! Where oh where does one purchase these matte OPI colours in Canada? I can't even find their matte topcoats, much less their matte colours.
ReplyDeleteDid you just add shiny topcoat to the tips, not a shiny Lincoln Park?
Gorgeous!
Saw a clip on our local news which led me to your blog. Wow! Impressive! Love your stuff Chloe!
ReplyDeleteThanks!!!
DeleteHow can I email this to a friend?
ReplyDeleteYou can copy the link to this page and paste it in an email :)
DeleteSo totally cool! Will post it on my wedding blog linked back to you, the girls will love it, especially the ones doing black and white weddings!
ReplyDeleteThe matte polish is discontinued. :( Any other suggestions? I really love this look.
ReplyDeleteI would just use a dark polish, and then use a matte top coat on it :)
DeleteLOVE the matte.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I saw this I fell in LOVE! And decided I have to try this. Went to ULTA and looked at OPI Lincoln Park After Dark but it came out glossy not matte (as I wanted). Can you share what the OPI number is? Is it W42? Was there a special collection 'MATTE' or should buy the suede collection? Pls let me know! I can't wait to have nails like this!!! Again, LOVE IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteYes it is from their matte collection. I don't know the number, because it's home, but it is vrey hard to find now :(
DeleteThank you for replying. I was able to buy the matte version of LPAD on ebay.
DeleteHi Chloe, I'm new to your blog and absolutely love it!!! You've got talent girl, I'll be busy for awhile trying to repeat so many of your beautiful nails, can't wait!! I've been trying to contact you via email but haven't gotten a reply so I'm hoping this way is better to reach you. I wanted to try the OPI LINCOLN PARK AFTER DARK matte mani w/ shiny tips but having a hard time finding the discontinued matte polish. I did buy ESSIE's Matte About You top coat and Seche Vites top coat and I did find OPI LPAD nail lacquer (not matte) and was wondering if I'd get the same look using the regular OPI polish with the Essie matte top coat and then seche vite for tips. Will that work? I think Ebay has the OPI matte form of LPAD for $27 and the regular OPI LPAD non-matte polish is selling for $7, so if I could get the same look just using the matte top coat I'll buy the $7 OPI. I didn't want to order either polish without your advice first. If you feel the look will be better with the actual matte OPI polish then I'll splurge. Basically I just want to know if the 2 polishes are the same color (matte and lacquer in LPAD)and if you feel the essie matte top coat will work or do you recommend getting the OPI MATTE polish. Please let me know. Any advice you have on that mani will be greatly appreciated. I'll keep it short in future writings, I promise. Keep up the great nails!!!

ReplyDeletecertainly like your website however you have to check the spelling on several of your posts. Several of them are rife with spelling problems and I to find it very bothersome to inform the reality on the other hand I'll definitely come back again.

Leon,
DeleteI suggest you spend a bit more time on punctuation before criticizing others for spelling errors. IJS
It's ok Leon, I support the bad spelling police; I'm a fully paid up member haha, and it irks me so sometimes. People should not be reprimanded for correcting bad spelling. It's done with good intentions and no malice. At least by me! I'm just a tad pedantic ho hum....
DeleteI LOVE the matte and gloss look, but didn't know what nail polish to buy! Thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you how much I love this!!! I literally gasped when I saw this pic on pintrest...I will def tag you in my post. I will be talk about putting yourself first and having me time!!!!
ReplyDeleteI love this mani! I went to Amazon to order the OPI and mistakenly ordered the reg. color not the matte. Will have to try again or look for a matte-ifier.
ReplyDeleteAmazon is out of stock of this color. I googled it and found it on another. Color is discontinued so it's hard to find.
DeleteJust got it on Ebay.
Deleteits just amazing!!!!! i would like to manage to do that .... but first question is ..... where to buy that amazing nail polish.... i owe you a favor if you respond to my comment...
ReplyDeletep.s.please anwser...

DeleteOMG! this is so amazing...really awesome....and i also wanna know that where can you get these nail paints from...?
ReplyDeleteGorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteYou have just the perfect nails!!! Love love love this
ReplyDeleteSomeone stole your idea...
ReplyDeletehttp://retailtherapy.onsugar.com/Nails-Story-I-LOVE-Matte-Black-French-Twist-21979389
But I definitely love the matte color with the gloss on the tip.
Hello Chloe! This style is so chic!! I tried it today, with a matte top coat on Chanel polish (505 Particulière), then tape, then paint the tips with Sephora "Ultra shine top coat"
ReplyDeleteWell, it ended not so well : maybe I put too much shiny top coat on the tips because a "crest" (kind of a little edge) appeared between the matte parts and the shiny tips...
Anyway, I'll keep on trying! :)
Thanks for your blog, by the way, everything is amazing! ;)
I have to do this........ordered the Matte polish and have the shiny black already.........do you use a top coat on this? Cannot figure out how you would. Thanks
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I understand your question, but I think you would use the shiny polish then maybe tape and then a matte top coat

ReplyDeleteSomeone else posted this saying that the look involves black polish. Tsk tsk!

I'm hopin to create it with the OPI LPAD regular polish (not matte) and just use a matte top coat and swipe seche vite on tips for xtra shine. Will that work?? HELP ME!!

ReplyDeleteCan you tell us step by step how you did it? .. I painted my nails a green color & then later when it was coming off, it stained my nails a ugly yellowish green. its been 2 months & I want the person who I go to, do my nails just like this! How does it last??
ReplyDeleteplease email me: x1nevaeh7x@gmail.com
I'm in love with this unique look. Wonderful job!
ReplyDeleteDear Chloe,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to tell you that your imagination and techniques are just amazing!
I fell in love with this matte french, which I immediately repinned, and now repined by 3 other girls.
So contagious ;)
What surprised me more is that you created this long time ago! What a trend setter!
Thank you***
from a royal reader.
Hi there, I recently found your blog and attempted to do the black matte with shiny tips but I am facing a problem. I used the matte polish and added clear top coat to the tips but now I have something like an edge where the shiny part is showing. I am not sure how to get rid of it since I can't use a top coat on the entire nail. I used tape to make the tips and have applied a really thin layer. Any suggestions? Also, how do you prevent the nail polish from running under the tape when doing designs? I always have ugly smudges when I remove the tape... I really want to be a bit creative with my nails, but these things are driving me insane lol..
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I saw this mani, that is, picture of it, on some site in Croatia. And I used it as an inspiration. And now I randomly come upon your blog, and see this among your popular posts! Life is awesome this way, I guess. Beautiful mani, beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing, love it. Apparently, others love it too and don't give credit to you....

As soon as I found this kind of I fell inside ENJOY! As well as decided I have to make this happen. Attended ULTA and also checked out OPI Lincoln Recreation area At night but it came out shiny not matte (as I wanted). Would you discuss what the OPI quantity is usually? Will it be W42? Was there an exclusive series 'MATTE' or perhaps can buy the suede series? Pls let me know! I can't delay to obtain claws similar to this!!! Again, ADORE IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteMatte nail polish
